"There were various miraculous things about this pumpkin. The show was early in the autumn - in the first week of September - and so this fruit had swelled to its magnificent size in just six weeks from pollination. It had been grown by Mark Baggs, an 18-year-old farmer, who had been growing veg for only two years. Mark had an even bigger pumpkin still growing in his garden, which he was sure would outdo the first come harvest time, just before Hallow'een. And sure enough it has, weighing in at 388kg (855lb) and about the size of my my VW Beetle."

Anyone who wants to grow a pumpkin on this scale needs the help of a giant veg expert such as Clive Beven, who is Mark's mentor. He has been growing pumpkins for 20 years and is keen to pass on his knowledge to anyone who wants to do the same.

The key thing, he says, is getting the right seed. Clive has selected every year from the biggest and best in his and others' gardens. He doesn't grow one named variety (such as 'Atlantic Giant'), but has crossed three or four different cultivars over many years.
